Who doesn’t enjoy eating ice cream, especially on hot summer day, or just for a delicious treat? When students were told that they were going to be doing just that, hearts began pounding with excitement, then doubt. How is this possible at school? Not typical right?  Well, many of the 8th graders at Woodridge know that science in Ms. Beckwith’s class isn’t your typical classroom either.

On March 7, 2015, FNN reporters from Tech Prep and Woodridge went to Selma, Alabama to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge—an event that changed American history. 

In order to fully experience the aftermath of the civil rights movement, five students from FNN were chosen to travel to Selma, Alabama for the 50th anniversary of the march from Selma to Montgomery. I am happy to say that I was one of those five. On the day of the trip, we all met at the airport and introduced ourselves. 

Today's adventure was tiring and exciting. Everybody woke up and met in the lobby at 6:30 this morning. We hit the road for an hour and 30 minute drive to Selma from Montgomery. We arrived at Ms. Kadesha’s on Leola N. Robertson Street to have breakfast with Mr. Jimmie Webb and some of his activist friends.

For some time now, there have been many complaints about school lunch. I say, “What’s all the fuss really about?”  If you don’t like what they are serving, then pack your own lunch at home and eat what you like. But, to be honest, many kids don’t have it like that. Their parents are sending them to school to learn and be served a breakfast and lunch daily.

History is always depicted as a dull, boring topic. We can read the words in textbooks, recite the dates of events, and study countless hours about things we’ll forget as soon as the unit is over. The names and events are just ink on paper that people usually think so little about. Even when it’s stressed about how important our roots are, and what made today today, does anyone really care?
