My First Time at Awesome Con
Story and photo by Walter Jones.
On Saturday, April 5th, 2025, I went to Awesome Con at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. Awesome Con is a huge event where fans of comics, movies, anime, video games, and cosplay come together. It was my first time going to something this big, and I went to cover it for Friendship News Network.
The place was massive, and I wish I could have stayed for all three days. Honestly, I wish I had cosplayed too. I did take some pictures, but most of the time, I just walked around, talked to people, and learned about how they made their costumes. Some people used simple stuff like cardboard and shoelaces, and others made super detailed outfits that looked amazing. Everything was so creative.
One of the coolest things I did was go to a meetup where everyone dressed as superheroes. We split into Marvel and DC groups and took a big group picture. I also tried out a Virtual Reality military game where I had to fight someone. Later, I spoke to a man about his costume, and he said he spent a few months making it just for this event.
Another awesome moment was meeting Dennis McDonald, the actor who played Reggie in Bad Boys. He was very approachable and took pictures with everyone.
Next year, I’m definitely going back. I’m planning to cosplay as either Kaneki from Tokyo Ghoul or Isagi Yoichi from Blue Lock. Mark Your Calendars, because the next Awesome Con is March 13–16, 2026. I seriously can't wait!
